Espírito Santo has a long history of coffee production, once the state’s principal economic activity and still responsible for around 30% of Brazil’s total output. While most of the state’s coffee is Robusta (specifically Conilon, a type of Canephora that originated from the Republic of Congo), high-altitude Arabica is also grown in the Caparaó Mountains, where the Atlantic Forest, cooler temperatures, and abundant rainfall create ideal conditions for complex, specialty coffees.
Coffees from Montanhas do Espírito Santo are celebrated for their floral fragrance, bright citric notes, and layered stone fruit flavors, finishing with a long, sweet aftertaste. Quality-driven growers in the region often use pulped natural processing, which helps control moisture and highlight the coffee’s nuanced profile, making Espírito Santo a source of both traditional and highly expressive Brazilian coffees.
