Gabriel Alves Nunes is an agronomist and third-generation coffee grower of Fazenda Bom Jardim, a farm near Patrocino in the Cerrado Mineiro region of Minas Gerais. Like many young farmers in the region, historically known more for its high-volume production than its specialty coffee, Gabriel has focused his recent efforts on producing high quality and unique coffees through environmental awareness, experimentation and an understanding of market demands. These efforts paid off big time in 2017 when Gabriel not only took first place in Brazil’s Pulped Natural Cup of Excellence competition but set an all-time price record for any coffee ever sold through a COE auction ($166/LB!!!).
This lot from Fazenda Bom Jardim was picked at the peak of ripeness and underwent a 48-hour anaerobic fermentation inside sealed grain pro bags before being removed and dried on raised beds. The result is a complex yet approachable coffee with a rich, silky body, notes of sweet toffee and almonds, and bright white grape acidity.
