Magalhães Paiva Family

The Magalhães Paiva family has been growing coffee at Fazenda Recanto since 1896, and many of the farm’s original structures are still standing and still in use. The farm has long been known for the quality of its coffee, with awards ranging from the 1930’s to recently winning the Rainforest Alliance competition. Since 1985, Maria Selma and Afranio have managed the farm, maintaining the well-deserved reputation of consistently producing great coffee. Having raised their family on the farm, Maria Selma and Afranio now share the coffee production with daughter Paula Magalhães Paiva, the 5th generation of coffee growers at Recanto.

Maria Selma and Afranio are our long-time and friends and partners and have even traveled to Myanmar to help growing partners with our sister company set up a new mill to the highest standards.

Apart from the quality coffee, the Magalhães Paiva family have made it a goal to ensure that the farm is a model of sustainability. In 2006, they became one of the first farms in Brazil to certify with the Rainforest Alliance. Additionally, over one third of the farm has been set aside as a natural preserve, ensuring that the diverse fauna and flora that thrive at Recanto will remain for the generations to come.
